Alsheich

A street on Kerem HaTeimanim neighbourhood

Kerem HaTeimanim (Vineyard of the Yemenites) was established in 1881 as an early neighbourhood in the growing pioneer city of Tel Aviv by recent immigrant Yemenite Jews. Located in the City Center, its architecture - characterized by a low building, courtyards and very narrow streets -  was based on the designs of the former Jewish ghettos in Yemen.

Today, the neighbourhood is being gentrified with new residents, and gaining popularity among younger, educated people, mainly due to its proximity to central Tel Aviv and the city's beaches.

Alsheich street (above) was named after Rabbi Moshe Alsheich (1508 - 1600), a prominent Jewish rabbi, a biblical commentator and a disciple of R. Joseph Caro, author of the "Shulhan Aruch".
